FREO TODAY

Freo Today. 14 July 2026. Kaya! Pelican on duty to welcome morning ferry arrival at Thomson Bay, Wadjemup, in from Walyalup. And as coincidence would have it, that vessel behind the pelican is named ‘Kaya’, and is one of the busy Rottnest barges. The Rottnest Barge Service’s two dedicated landing craft, Kaya and Spinifex, are capable of providing all the freight requirements to Rotto, including all utilities, supplies and construction materials. A Freo Love Story From Pemberton

This week we received this lovely email and photograph from Sabrina King of Pemberton, for whom Freo is also a special place. Sabrina writes - Dear FSN Team, I'd love to share a photograph I captured of Fremantle Harbour at sunset. Although I live a few hours away, Fremantle has become a place I return to whenever I need to slow down and reconnect. There is something about its streets, its history and its harbour that always draws me back. On this particular evening, I was driving through Fremantle with my teenage daughter when I suddenly saw this view. I…

After The Game With Snaps Truly – Rd 17 2026 V Greater Western Sydney

The prospect: The inconsistent but talented GWS Giants in Canberra. To be watched presumably from the couch, mid morning on Saturday in South Fremantle. Not exactly a heart racing proposition. No, I rather fancied something more immersive today. Maybe some gonzo journalism. Some fear and loathing in Fremantle and to quote Hunter S, the promise of  ‘madness in any direction, at any hour.’ And so I headed to a much talked about Fremantle hostelry that has earned a dangerous reputation recently as the place Freo fans go to be whipped into a frothing frenzy. I wondered if it would require me to take large amounts of drugs or get kidnapped or fire an elephant gun. The place was already packed by…

Interview with Brendan Kelly – Biographer of ‘Jerry’ Hart

In the last couple decades of the 19th century, the 1880s and 1890s, as Western Australia earned Responsible Government, the Gold Rush became a thing, and Federation approached, a 19 year old Francis Jerome Ernest Hart arrived in the Swan River Colony from London to take up a teaching position. Before long he had assumed the career of a journalist, first on the Fremantle Herald and later in Geraldton and Perth, as well as venturing into the world of the theatre. Along the way he married the lovely Lilian and the became musical friends of the Governor of the period,…
